Unless you heard about real time and ordinary control theory I would suggest to 
take a look at real time scheduling.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earliest_deadline_first_scheduling it is all 
about periodic taks which preferably should complete in time. Real time dead 
lines is important for smoth motion of machine.

If you like graphics take a look at linuxcnc and try to figure out improvements 
either in code or user interface. Detach graphics so user inteface may be 
edited by glade is good but I am not sure how it is with this right now.
