I wasn't involved in the implementation of those pins, but I actually
thought that they were intended to take effect with the system "live"
(though probably _not_ during G-code  execution)

It might be that you need to deliberately synch realtime to non-realtime.

I am starting to think that there is a role for an M-code or G-code
that specifically purges the queue and synchs realtime to to
user-space.
