I've not had to use it in recent history Jon, because ntpd seems to run 
ok. On everything I have here.

But there is still, in my wheezy listings, adjtimex, which does rather 
like ntpd, but adjusts the clock itself until it only has to correct it 
once or twice a day. if the clock starts wandering again, it will 
shorten the update interval until it either has it in hand, or has run 
out of adjustment. Its such an old standard, I be dissappointed if its 
not in your *buntu repo's.  Either one of course needs unfettered access 
to the internet, and a list of 4 or so time servers, such as at 
pool.ntp.net or whatever your isp uses for a master clock.
