We're not currently promoting Ubuntu-based installs because of changes in (or maybe clarifications in our understanding of) Canonical's attitude towards derived products. We strive to make it easy for non-Linux-gurus to install LinuxCNC, by providing installer ISOs based on upstream (Debian or Ubuntu) installers. Canonical recently made it legally onerous to produce derivative installers. This was one of the major factors prompting us to switch our focus to Debian during the Wheezy time frame. Adding support for newer distros and producing installers ISOs with realtime kernels for those distros is a significant effort. Jeff has done a fantastic job making sure we run well on RT-Preempt, and producing installer ISOs based on Stretch and RT-Preempt.
