For an update, it just took the pi (on the lathe) about 8 hours to build 
a 4.14.y.v7 rt-preempt kernel, but as I watched it from time to time, I 
saw it building stuff not needed, and that can be removed from 
the .config.  So that time could likely be shrunk. This was working from 
a 60 GB sata ssd, hooked up to a usb-3 adapter plugged into a usb-2 port 
and partitioned with about 10GB as swap. And using another 40GB 
partition  as workspace. This despite being unable to confirm that it 
was being built for an armhf. I could not find it in a make menuconfig.

With that much swap, the binutils bug did not appear to be anything but a 
speed limit, the LD phase was a very consistent 1 second per module 
processed.

The grin is close to reaching my ears... ;-)
