I can't "see" it either. If and when one of us finds it, it will be a
forehead slapper for sure. All I can say is that it did work, sorta,
but now errors w/o killing lcnc.

Change of subject, I have the laser working quite well, and have had
another thought. The beam is pretty well aligned, staying within a mm of
center clear to the tailstock. So now I have in mind taping a small
solar cell to the face of the tailstock barrel and reading its output
with a DVM in milliamps mode. With a shutter to block some of the beam
clamped to the toolpost I ought to be able to get well within a thou
everywhere. Just spin the spindle fast enough the reading is stable on
the DVM. No camera needed. Looks like I'll have to hit the yard sales
and find something with a solar cell I can use, as I don't have one
except for some calculators I don't want to tear up..

So haveing a small leak at the hot side of the water heater from a
corroded connection, I went to Lowes and got a replacement armored flex
hose to replace that, and a $3.95 stake light, which has a solar cell to
charge a teeny nicad battery which lights up a white led at night, for
about a half candlepower to mark the edge of your sidewalk. But it
looks like, from the copper dots I can see, that ita fabbed as 4 cells
wired in series to get enough to charge the nicad. So I may have to
cover it with a diffuser to scatter the laser enough so all 4 cells get
some of it. Thats of course a SWAG until I take it apart to get the
cell(s) out of it. Any single cell based nightlights were CDS controlled
which aren't at all stable with time and ambient humidity. And cost 2x
as much! So we'll have to experiment to find the best way to rig it as
a beam power measuring device. If I could break it to get one piece
about .095" across or square, that would be ideal.
