I did a short test and it's an all or nothing type of change "I think", for sure you can't just change one and have it build. I did see some areas of the submakefile that would have to be changed as well. Changing one and the build fails.

Seems to imply that every file is explicity added by name.
So, that does at least mean that any new file that is added can use .adoc
