Turns out python-yapps, which wasn't installed, will work.

But now, talk to me about "units" which I've forgotten about, but which
apparently is being ignored, until hal needs a pin on it about 800 lines
of hal later.

I have in my main hal file, a

loadusr units

no options to wait or? the next reference is in postgui.hal

net display-mode <= units.prog_mm => pyvcp.x-in-mm pyvcp.z-in-mm

And the pin on units.prog_mm doesn't exist. Nothing from units is shown
in the hal-configure display.

Now, I'm going to pan raspbian for makeing openoffice 6 the default
display for a pdf. It takes it well into 1.5 gigs of ram to run it,
about 75 megs of swap and around 22 minutes to translate it into
something OO can display. 22 minutes of watching a blank screen with
half a dozen blue progress bars repeating a march across the bottom of
the screen before it displays a single character on the screen. The
display quality is then excellent albeit slow to page thru it. And the
find function is similarly slow.

Then I'm going to thank you folks, You've added some additional data,
about 130 more pages that OO calls slides. A huge improvement IMO,
thank you very much.
