I actually didn't have a look at OpenCN code, so I cannot tell about that.
As far as what I think about machinekit. The planned approach was really nice 
and
using zmq as messaging system has quite potential.
But before I moved away from machinekit, back to lcnc, the guys at machinekit
focussed a lot more on implementing gimmicks instead a reliable, easy to handle 
system.
Don't know what's the actual state there by now.

Somebody knows of some sort of compare nml and zmq?
