I just downloaded
http://linuxcnc.org/dists/stretch/2.8-rtpreempt/source/linuxcnc_2.8.0~pre3.tar.xz.
for a RIP compilation.
The ./src directory already contains a configure shell script (./configure
--help gives a mix of Spanish / English, I suspect what is the reason) so
that script is not generated by ./autogen.sh
