Sorry. I seem to be confusing the situation again. I thought that the PARPORT options still had (experimental) and (new) tags in the current kernel. But don't see them now. It is possible that I saw them in a config during my googling to fix the issue, and did not notice that they are no longer marked as new or experimental. It still leaves open the question as to whether the additional sub-options have been enabled in previous kernels.
