One advantage of experimental branches existing in the main archive is
that they get built by the buildbot. This means that packages are
(briefly) available, which can lower the bar to other users trying out
the change.
It also means that the branch gets test-built on many more platforms
and OSes than is generally practical for a single developer.

That said, there is definitely plenty of scope for tidying up.
