Can the git CI trigger a request on our web server, then a script on
the server can fetch the (publically accessible) docs files from git
(CGI maybe?)

Well, you could always do request. However, doing so would expose you to a potential DDOS because you have to publish the endpoint. And when the API is publicly known (CI is public) you get into the same private key issues.

I think that (try) adding a symlink docs/html/ -> docs/build/html/ is our best and quickest option at this moment. It needs to be done in the docs/Submakefile and Luca is the one intricately familiar with that can of worms :-)

I have had a quick look around on the server and not found an existing
script for this (not that that necessarily means that there isn't one)

The question whether it is instantaneous or maybe the server polls once in a while. May want to take a look at the crontabs (there is more than one place where parts can be).

Otherwise, might there be something defined in the github config for LinuxCNC that only the master of all masters can see? I have not detected anything there and CI does not do anything special afaics.
