KFLomonaco posted a question as to whether some equipment needs to be
immunity tested & is looking for verification of that.
He looks for those who are very familiar with the EMC Directive in this.
It would seem to me that this is not a question regarding knowledge of the
Directive but, rather, familiarity with the response of particular
equipment
to these tests.
They would, seemingly, want to base their compliance on engineering
judgement (which is an acceptable way to do this). However, they apparently
have no experience as to whether the equipment is really immune to the immunity
tests specified and want to use the judgement of someone else in making the
decision. It's fairly certain that their competitors would not provide that
assurance, especially if they had already spent the money to do the testing.
They could work with their EMC lab, who might have experience with similar
equipment - and may be willing to issue a letter or report declaring that the
equipment meets the immunity requirements without any testing needed. They
might, more likely, get a verbal opinion from an EMC lab that the equipment is
ok and doesn't need to be tested - but you can't put that in your technical
file. Finally, looking to consultants, I hardly think that any reputable person
would issue any letter or report of compliance without a firm data base (test
results); plus any hearsay opinion from a consultant would not be sound
technical file documents.
So, it falls back onto their own experience... I would think that they
would want to test a representatively complex piece of equipment and show that
it is compliant. This would provide the basis for sound engineering judgement
for extending these results to the rest of the product line. This documented
results and rationale are sound basis for claiming compliance and a very
valuable piece of the technical file.
Others might have a different opinion. As a consultant I wouldn't
invoke
engineering judgement when I have no basis for it.
