Rick Busche asks whether or not there is any threat of visual injury in
viewing a small, bright CRT. Not enough information was given to fully evaluate
the spot brightness, especially the full beam voltage. However, having more
than 15 years experience in designing and evaluating CRT's buried in my past, I
don't believe that threat of visual injury is a major threat to those working
with these displays. The light output is not collimated like that of a laser.
We commonly looked carefully at CRT spots under either low power, hand held
magnifiers or under high power microscopes. Microscope viewing could be bright
enough to cause you to squint or look away, but the enlarged spot filled a large
portion of the field of view and wouldn't be intense in a small part of your
retina.
Presumably the CRT has been evaluated for limitation of X-ray emission
under both normal and fault conditions and would not pose a problem for the
technician in any situation during evaluation, repair or setup.
Hopefully this helps answer the question.
