rguest@anonymous enquired about 48V DC equipment meeting the Low Voltage
Directive.
The LVD applies to equipment operating between 50V & 1000V AC or
equipment operating between 75V & 1500V DC. Obviously this equipment mentioned
operates at a voltage below 75V DC and, therefore, the LVD does not apply to
this equipment. The General Product Safety Directive (92/59/EEC) does apply to
the equipment, however. This Directive requires that only safe products be
placed on the market. Compliance should be assessed by reference to any
appropriate EN, which means that EN 60950 for IT Equipment - which also applies
to telecomm equipment, which commonly operates at 48V DC - is an appropriate
standard for that type of equipment (other EN standards would apply to other
types of equipment). CE marking is not allowed for in the provisions of the
General Product Safety Directive. You would therefore conclude that your
Manufacturer's Declaration of Conformity would include reference to the GPSDir
(citing EN 60950, for example) along with the EMC Dir (citing your EMC
standards) and the CE marking on the product would be placed there to conform
with the EMC Directive.
