Don,

IEC 73 should be the one you're looking for and is currently in the 4th 
edition retitled as "Coding of indicating devices and actuators by colours 
and supplementary means". EN60073 is the harmonized version.

I don't believe this is a required standard in its own right, but one that 
I've found in the past needing to be complied with when a couple of products 
that I was involved with were being evaluated for the international market.

Just my 1-1/2 cents worth.

Does anyone know if there are any formal restrictions to using  red
colored lights for front panel displays and indicators?

Is there a harmonized European standard or regulation or a specific
national regulation that requires the restriction of the color red for
warning, danger, etc.

It seems it may have been a German ergonomic requirement before various
standards were harmonized.  Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
