Here's a question about the history of capacitor design. Does anyone
know when the extended foil spiral wound capacitor design was invented?
And by whom? Is there a relevant patent?
To clarify, I'm talking about the capacitor design which has one foil
(or metalized plastic) plate element exposed at each side of the
winding. This little trick allows a connection to be made to the entire
edge of the capacitor plate, yielding significantly lower internal
impedance. Thus, a higher self-resonant frequency, with the capacitor
still acting like a capacitor should up to much higher frequencies.
My memory tells me that this design was pre 1966, maybe much earlier.
What unknown (to me) engineer do we have to thank for this innovative
development?
