We have a potential use for thoriated-tungsten filament wire which, because of the thorium, is slightly radioactive - somewhat like a luminous watch dial. A search of US regulations shows that such wire is specifically exempted from NRC licensing requirements if it has less than 4% thorium. Does anyone know if similar exemptions exist in other countries, specifically Europe and Japan. Is there a Directive in the European Community related to radioactive materials and do individual countries have more stringent regulations?
