Michael, there is a growing concern among many about the environmental
impacts of many of the "traditional" coatings. Many of the "paint"
manufacturers have been feverously working on low VOC formulations which
maintain good surface uniformity, uniform conductivity and shielding
effectiveness, and wear resistance.

Many of the metal plating firms have enacted new waste recalimation
practices and they've even created new plating procedures in order to
reduce any harmful wastes.

This has all been a slow process (here in the U.S. at least), but it
appears that some headway is being made. I have no specifics to give you
right now, but all of these technologies are continually making small
advances.
