A collegue of mine says that he remembers a Transformer Gapping Material that was made of glass beads suspended in a paste/fixitive. You would use the appropriate sized beads for the gap that you wanted. You would apply the material to one side of the transformer core and press the ends together. The beads would seperate out, giving you one layer of beads at the gap you require.
