Beg to differ with you on this "Plugs For China" saga. First of all, with regards to the plugs of the type under discussion, GB2099-1-96 and GB1002-96 CCEE Approval are the most recent and current National Standards of China. Ron, as with the US or Canada, you are correct, in China only compliance with a given standard is mandatory, however, in the real-world of today, you try to market without third party conformance assessment involvement and see how far you get before you hit a brick wall. Attempt to market a plug in the US without UL and/or NRTL markings and see what happens. We are talking about the moulded-on plug forming part of a detachable cord set or power cord as a component only! Just how many power cord set manufacturers/vendors in the US today are actively supplying unmarked moulded-on plugs? None?
For China, in practical terms, you should have the "Great Wall Mark" on the plug if you wish to sell it within China or, be ready to take on a losing cause (20 millon electrical inspectors). For an OEM, it is possible to have an unmarked plug accepted by SACI as part of the CCIB Licensing process, however, the cost of this undertaking will most likely cause you to suffer some sort of heart failure. Why is it that, while only compliance to the NEC is mandatory in the US and your own companies most likely utilise Listed/Certified/Approved plugs? We may disagree with the third party approval concept, however, this is today in China (US/Canada and many other parts of the world). Besides, it currently keeps me employed so, I must admit, I go along with the concept!<grin> Some comments have been made with regards to China currently making use of many plug configurations along with nifty plug-into anything adapters, therefore, there are no requirements for plugs in China. True, however, China is finally beginning to come to grips with a national standardised plug. Transition from a mish mash of configurations to standard plugs will take a number of years and possibly decades before it takes hold but, the process has started and this with many areas yet to have access to electrical power. Can anyone recall when the NEMA three prong grounded outlet and plug was introduced (I can, the again, I'm old) in North America? Heck some folks are still using three to two prong cheater plugs in the US today! Let's not even mention the current polarised version so, what is correct and what is practised may differ. In the field of Product Safety, I would suggest that; what is correct is the only thing that is legally binding. In closing, there is the issue of "My Panel Components catalogue shows that the Australian and the Europlug are used in the People's Republic of China". Well, my dear colleague, your catalogue is correct, they are in use today, however, they do not comply with current National Standards of China and only this catalogue only serves to mislead you into the miscomception that this is in line with what is currently offically acceptable by SACI/CCIB/CCEE. ******************************************** Serge F. However, compliance with GB 1002 is mandatory.
