For those of you who are interested in the minutes of the Colorado Product Safety Technical Committee meeting that was held on October 7, 1998, please read on.
On Wednesday October 7, 1998, the CPST meeting was held at the Exabyte facilities. The meeting was hosted by Richard Georgerian and Kent Shown of Exabyte, both are Product Compliance Engineers for Exabyte. Minutes of the meeting: 1) Eleven members attended the meeting. This is considered good and above average. 2) Election for the Chairman was held. Richard Georgerian was unanimously reelected to Chairman. 3) The members have decided to not to have combined meetings with the EMC society, however, our meetings would be held earlier in day to allow those who are interested in attending both meetings, can do so. 4) One of our members is interested in the becoming a speaker/lecturer. More details will be provided to him by the Chairman as to the specifics of becoming a speaker/lecturer. 5) Some of our members who were volunteers to the IEEE EMC Symposium this past August in Denver, Colorado, provided some insight to the "behind" the scenes look of making a successful symposium. Good job to everyone making the symposium a success. 6) Our next meeting may be with the locals EMC vendors night if our members are interested. Otherwise, the meeting may be held in early December, but most definitely in the second week of January 1999. 7) Our meeting revolved around a possible idea for a "Design" safety workshop. This was brought up that many of our members have gone to seminars that reviewed the standards and was very light on specific design equipment using the standard. Some of the ideas and comments from our member are as follows: a. Use non recognized components in other listed products or other recognized assemblies. b. Design analysis of double insulated requirement for power supplies. c. More details on Laser Class I requirements and design considerations. d. More details on the LED IEC825 requirements and design considerations. Also, the interpretations from country to country should be consistent. e. Comparing different component and/or equipment standards from different countries is hard to do. f. Problems with acquiring safety markings for Class II power supplies for outdoor use. g. Switch mode power supplies having the bulk storage capacitors venting when in an idle mode. h. Need better guidance on plastics such as flame ratings, traceability, derating, markings and certificate of compliance statements.
