I believe network analyzers will help you out. They are in line "data
reading probes" and should be able to tell you about drop packets, and
collisions. etc. 
If this is an Ethernet the transmission protocol CS/MACD (I think)  LAN the
system keeps monitoring the media (interconnecting wire for simplicity) and
if two guys try to talk at the same time its called a collision. The system
then tells the colliding parties to quite sending and gives each a random
time period to wait until it tries again. If at that time the computer
wanting to send data doesn't sense anyone else using the LAN, it tries to
transmit again. As long as somebody else doesn't try sending at the same
time life is good. If someone else does try then its back to square one. A
collision is detected ad nausium. Obviously, works a whole lot better than
in sounds because this is standard protocol and network routers are capable
of sending over 40 million minimum sized packets a second. Actually, you're
probably not worried about them, since that is the gigabit Ethernet world
and they use fiber cables in the backbone, including the NIC's. The Ethernet
and fast Ethernet systems use essentially telephone wiring that is laying
around the office anyway. This was a big thing in the development of today's
intranets - nobody wanted to spend money rewiring their buildings. So they
picked wiring that was already there - kinda sorta - but close enough for
this particular pearl of wisdom. That stuff runs overhead, up the walls and
just everywhere somebody needs to get a signal. So you have the great big
nasty ol loop of wire running around just waiting to get infected. Buildings
and houses are really wired, at least in the last bunch of years, with CATV
cable, which is a glorified telephone unshielded 26 AWG twisted pair.
