An H/P seminar handbook for the 8566/8568 states that "three
criteria must be met for average detection; 1: the video-filter bandwidth
must be 10-100 times less than bandwidth of the resolution filters and less
than the lowest pulse repetition frequency. 2: Linear amplitude display mode
must be used. and 3: the sweep time must be slow enough that the video
filters charge to their full amplitude values" I hope this helps!

There is somewhere a HP app note on how to perform CISPR average
measurements (by calculating the VBW vs frequency). It was written for
the 8566/8568 analyzers Its about 15 yrs old but someone on this list
should have it. I lost mine and I don't recall the exact title. What I
do, is to use a VBW of 3Hz at 0 span. That seems to correlate with the
8546's built in average detector.
