I agree with the yellow book approach. It can be very useful. The only
potential "gotcha" is that the book is out of date as soon as it is printed.
So if the product is new but doesn't appear in the book it might only mean
that the recognition was received after the book was sent off for printing.
If that happens the UL engineer you are working with can generally look it
up on their electronic data base.
If you use a lot of plastics they have another addition that
provides some other useful information along with the recognition, including
the flame index, tracking index, Hot wire index, Arc resistance and others.
Its not the only answer to your question but it certainly is
convenient as a starting point, and comparatively cheap. CSA and VDE have
versions of the same thing but I haven't found them as easy to extract data
from, and generally speaking if somebody is bothering with UL they probably
have done the same thing with CSA (When separate approvals are necessary)
and VDE or one of the TUV's. It gives you a warm fuzzy that these other
approvals may exist. If my memory serves, some of the UL CCN numbers have
suffixes which indicate CSA approvals. Now if they would just put it on CD
for rapid information retrieval I'd be a happy camper.
If you are using other NRTL's many of them accept the UL marks as
well for components.

Hi Ray and George,
Compliance with UL 1950 can be demonstrated with UL, ETL, and NRTL
safety
marks. Thus, the UL Yellow book is one of potential sources of the
license
information (look at the product mark first).
