Help and suggestions are appreciated from any corner! 1. What we really want is a 5x20mm fuse rated at 8.0 amps with UL, CSA, and European agency approvals. We find that these types of fuses seem to loose their European approvals above 6.3 amps. Why is this? European agency approvals for fuses are to IEC127. IEC127 only applies to fuses of values up to 6.3A, why I don't know. 2. Are there other than 5x20mm fuses with UL, CSA, and European approvals????? Wickmann and Bussman make radial leaded fuses (approx 8mm high by 8mm diameter) approved by UL, CSA and SEMKO. These only go up to 4A though. Surface mount fuses are very slowly getting approved to IEC127 but at the moment they are limited to a very few values. 3. It is a shame to have an autoranging power supply rated 100-250 Vac and be stuck with providing different fuses for North American and European applications. Does your fuse have to comply to IEC127? IEC65 (the standard I use most) states that "fuses must comply with IEC127 unless they have a rated current outside the range specified in this publication" (ie greater than 6.3A). Could you use an 8A 5 x 20mm fuse that is Recognised by UL and CSA only? 4. What about the fuseholders? If you have to use 5 x 20mm for Europe and 1 1/4" x 1/4" for USA, there are PCB clips that can accomodate both types. (I've been preaching to hardware design engineers to use circuit breakers, but this equipment was designed outside my influence; and no, they don't want to redesign to use circuit breakers!) Think yourself lucky, the designers at my place refuse to use fuses as they affect the "sound quality" of the products - honest! It can make safety approval of high power amplifiers pretty tricky.
