R12 and R22 are freon based gases. R12 is that used for auto air conditioners and can no longer be produced in the U.S. R12 can still be sold (out of inventory) for ahile longer. R22 is used for building air conditioners and has not yet been banned in the U.S.
There are substitutes for R12 now being used in new cars here. I am not aware of any R22 substitutes yet, but there may be some. Dear Colleagues, I am looking for a sanity check on a rumor that has come to my attention. I have heard from contacts in Taiwan that it is illegal to use "R22" there. R22 is the brand name of the heat transfer fluid (often a replacement for Freon). It is classified as a class 2 ozone depleting substance. The chemical of concern is an HCFC, chlorodifluoromethane. If you know that this ban in Taiwan is true, or know of authoritative Taiwan contacts that could clarify this, I would appreciate any information.
