Our company manufactures Laboratory equipment. We are coming out with a new model that weighs about 375lbs (170kg). This is a tabletop model (lab bench).
I need to know if there are any restrictions on the amount of weight we require a person to lift. We would like to give instructions in our Users Manual that would specify the need for 4 people to lift the instrument onto the work surface. This would mean that each person would have to be able to lift nearly 100lbs (45.4kg). Is this too heavy? Are there any special warnings, instructions, or concerns with this? The EN61010 standards only says the following: ---- 7.4 Provisions for lifting and carrying Where carrying handles or grips are supplied with the equipment they shall be capable of withstanding a force of four times the mass of the equipment. Equipment of parts having a weight of 18 kg or more shall be provided with a means for lifting and carrying or directions shall be given in the manufacturer's documentation. ----- The definition of "means for lifting and carrying" could use some clarification. I assume this do not mean that I have to provide handles for lifting unless there is nothing to hold on to. Our instruments are designed so a person can get their hands under it to pick it up without pinching their fingers. Getting straps around and under the unit for use with a lift or boom crane is easy too. In this situation, do I have to provide anything special? Does anyone have any experience on this topic which would be helpful to me? Thanks, Brian Kunde LECO Corp. --------- This message is coming from the emc-pstc discussion list.
