Due to legal blocking by Congress, OSHA has failed over the last eight years to produce ergonomic requirements for the workplace. However, the legal restrictions on OSHA have lapsed and they have announced plans to commence a Proposal for Rule Making this fall. Assuming Congress does not institute another legal bock, the rules would be approved about mid-2000. It is not clear when they would take effect. The proposed draft is limited to manufacturing, materials handling, and other areas where wrist, hand and arm injuries have been documented. Other areas may therefore include workplaces with computer keyboards and mice.
