** Donald P. Bliss has been the New Hampshire Fire Marshal since August 1,
1992. As State Fire Marshal, he oversees fire investigations and fire &
building code enforcement throughout New Hampshire.
Fire Marshal Bliss's fire service career started with the Durham (UNH)
Fire Department in Durham NH, as a call firefighter; he progressed to
Fire Marshal/Deputy Chief between 1970 & 1980. He subsequently served
as Director of the U-CONN Fire Dept (Storrs, CT) and Fire Marshal in Salem
NH (until his appointment as State Fire Marshal, noted above, in 1992).
As State Fire Marshal, Bliss has implemented a comprehensive training
program for state fire investigators. As a result, fire investigators in
the State Fire Marshal's Office have been granted law enforcement and
arrest powers. Fire Marshall Bliss is active in numerous professional
organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association (Chair
of NFPA 1 Fire Prevention Code) & the National Association of State Fire
Marshals (NASFM). He has served as Past-President of the New Hampshire
Association of Fire Chiefs and in many other New Hampshire-based fire and
emergency response organizations.
He graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. in Political
Science and a Master of Public Administration degree and has completed
numerous courses at the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Maryland.
