I get asked quite often what a client needs to be able to do to
legally sell their products in the US, and we also do a reasonable
amount of UL agency work so we get people approaching us to ask
what's involved in the UL approval. I'd like to think I'm reasonably
up to date with the realities of this.
Many small clients get frightened off by the price of UL approval,
which I don't mind too much since I'd far rather spend a hour or two
explaining the facts of life and then knowing that they are committed
to the time and expense of a full approval programme rather than only
discovering that the client didn't really want to go down this route
after doing a whole load of work.
To try and help with this process, I'm writing a synopsis of the
requirements for the US, which will probably end up on our web pages.
As I said above, I'd like to think I know enough not to make any
major blunder with this, but review by others is always a good idea
for this sort of thing.
Rather than clog the mailing list up with what will be a reasonably
long message, I was wondering if there were a few people out there
who might be willing to give the draft of this the once-over and let
me know if they spot any major blunders or omissions. I'm not quite
sure what I can offer in return, but what goes around usually comes
around...

P.S. and before anyone says, I'm aware that UL approval is by no
means the be-all and end-all of requirements for the US: that's what
