Hi Peter A quick web search using "magnetic field strength earth polar" revealed the following site
http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/space/model/models/igrf.html which allows you to calculate the earth's magnetic field strength anywhere at any height. It seems that the field strength on the surface of the earth varies from around 55uT at the poles to 35uT at the equator - not very much.
