Hi Listmembers:
By now, everyone has been exposed to the tragic WTC events. A friend of mine has turned up an interesting study of the evacuation performance of the WTC immediately after the February 26, 1993 terrorist bombing. Some of the numbers mentioned in this 8 year old document are quite at odds with the currently reported WTC data. The document is titled "Human Behavior In The World Trade Center Evacuation", and is essentially an analysis of the performance of the safety protocols for the facility. As such, it seems on-topic for our group. The document is a 900 KB pdf file, available at my friend's web site: http://members.home.net/genemurphy1/WTC_Towers.pdf Some of the interesting numbers in this document (from 1993) are that there are approximately 40,000 people employed in EACH tower and an estimated 50,000 visitors are in both towers during a typical business day. Even though the event occurred at the beginning of the workday (0845), this is quite higher than what has been currently quoted. One other set of numbers also stands out; the amount of time that it takes to leave the building. Normally, residents were able to leave in about 8 minutes. But, during the evacuation of February 26, 1993, when EVERYBODY was trying to leave at the same time, the exit time varied between 1 hour and 3 hours. The North tower was struck at 0845 and collapsed at 1029. The South tower was struck at 0903 and collapsed at 0950.
