A GTEM can be very useful as long as its limitations are understood.
It is clearly a good precompliance engineering tool. You can get an emissions
readout in 15 minutes.
We use our GTEM for radiated Immunity and radiated emissions. We have a
software package that correlates the GTEM emissions measurements to an OATS
measurement.
For emissions we have experienced that our GTEM correlates very well
when the product is small (point source, one circuitboard) and has minimal
cabling (none is most desirable). Conditions that deviate from the ideal
will have the correlation fall off.
For radiated Immunity we have experienced that as long as the product
stays within the "uniform field" portion of the GTEM that it correlates well
to tests done in bigger Anechoic chambers.
Our experience is that the GTEM emissions readings consistently correlate
higher then OATS readings. You can use the correlation as a guard band.
As long as the correlation is understood the GTEM can be used to serve a
purpose.
