the damn frogs, did you try jump starting them with a battery :-) There has been a change in sensor construction and design because of accidents that occurred in scrap yards and garage workshops due to the precise scenario you described.
First it is quite a leap of faith to treat liquid gasoline as an insulating fluid coolant, but that is what is done. Electric fuel pumps are submerged in the stuff too. I took apart the fuel level and pump assembly from my 1990 Japanese originated car. The arm and float move a sliding contact along an exposed wirewound 'rheostat' element. the whole thing is completely open and 'skeletal' in construction. I haven't looked but there may be current limiting devices in the circuit.
