In short, the ATEX Directive replaces the existing CENELEC certification scheme.
For electrical equipment, the requirements (and standards) actually remain similar where third party certification is required but some equipment will now only require self-certification. The big changes are that mechanical equipment is now included within the scope of the Directive, and that the requirements become mandatory for all industries and locations where an explosive atmosphere may occur whereas previously the requirements have only been mandatory in safety lamp mines.
