Scott, I have designed a few off-line flybacks and one low voltage flyback converter. They are typically not used above 100 watts output. They are especially good for multiple outputs as the outputs tend to have tight inter-regulation. A common output inductor is not needed. They can be built to run from low Japanese AC line to high Australian without any switching. The drawbacks, compared to a balanced forward converter topology include a larger transformer, larger electrolytic caps, higher voltage transistor (but only one is needed), higher voltage rectifiers, and higher conducted noise that must be filtered, to name a few. Like any switcher there is a learning curve to the design knowledge. I tended towards current-mode, discontinuous flyback topology.
