All I can appreciate Derek Walton's dilemma about what standard to apply for such a device as I have come across the same sort of issue with some of our equipment. Certain products can be sold into both large industrial installations or smaller retail outlets, such as an opticians shop which may be connected directly to the public low voltage supply network (class A and Class B respectively as defined in EN61326). We have chosen to apply EN61326 throughout our product range but to ensure that any differences between that and the generic standards are addressed and the more stringent level applied. The D of C for our products refer to EN61326 as regards EMC. As regards safety I am not sure whether EN61010 is more stringent than "domestic" appliance standards. However, we apply EN61010-1. Thus we believe we have shown "due diligence" and at the end of the day that is what matters.
Good points of contact (in the UK) are Peter Howick [[email protected]] who will pass questions to the EN 61326 committee, and John Childs of BSI. ( Don't tell them I sent you otherwise they will never reply to me again!! ;-)). Alternatively, have a word with someone like John Allen of ERA in the UK - he is on this list - and would be only too pleased to help - we use them quite a lot as consultants.
