Dear group, I think this is worth sharing with the members who are WLAN providers.
Jointly announced by MII, SAC and CCEM on July 9, China WLAN GB standards published on May 12, 2003 will be fully enforced from December 1, 2003. So what's the big deal? Currently, China approves WLAN products (Routers, APs, Terminals, etc) based on international standards, e.g. IEEE 802.11/802.11b. From Dec 1, approvals will be based on the GB standards. There are many aspects of differences of GB standards from inernational standards, the major one and the most challenging one is the Encryption. GB standard will ONLY allow WAPI solution rather than widely used WEP to enhance the sucurity features of WLAN, according to SAC officer. In fact, most of WLAN suppliers said they are not ready yet to comply with the new GB standards. Why China only allows a few month transition? China SAC has contribted two ethernet related IPs to ISO (International Standard Organization) in the last a few years. WAPI solution is the ONLY one approved by ISO and assigned "IEEE ethertype field number". China is actively developing self-owned IP and enforcment of GB standard will apparantly facilitate the application of Chinese proposed Ethernet Security Solution to WLAN products.
