For this and other fundamental questions, we need to look at the standards and publications on which the GR's are based, and to which they refer. I don't have access to standards or GR's at present, but a quick Google(tm) search shows ASTM B-117 and Mil-Std-810 for salt fog testing, and a wealth of papers on corrosion.
