Vinod,

1. The ESD test allows reduction in function during the testing as long as it
returns to normal operation when the test is complete without operator
intervention. As long as these "bit errors" don't cause the system to hang it
should be ok. If it hangs up to where it has to be reset by the operator, then
that is a failure.

2. In section 8.3.1 of EN61000-4-2 it states, "...discharges shall be applied
only to those points and surfaces of the EUT which are accessible to persons
during normal use". Subsection C excludes testing of "surfaces of equipment
which are no longer accessible after fixed installation...".

3. I don't understand your question for #3.

PERSONALLY, If I were you, I would fix the bit error problem you are seeing
when
you discharge to the rear of the EUT. In my experience, even if you find a way
to Pass the EUT according to the standard's requirements, these problems always
come back to bite you in the butt. Fix it! Your company will end up with a
better product, your customers will be happier, and you will be able to sleep
better at night.

Dear Group,

I have a few questions on ESD testing.

1. When ESD testing a communications equipment, it is passing the tests at
4KV( Contact Discharge) and 8 KV (Air Discharge) without
any bit errors on the line. However, when an Air Discharge is done  on
metallic surface, we are getting errors at times. Few
discharges caused system hangs without any permanent damage. Is it mandatory
under the EN 61000 tests have no bit errors for Air
Discharge on metallic surfaces?

2. The above errors happen when the discharge is made on the rear side of the
system. Since, the system itself is categorised as
rack mounting do we need to do these tests towards the rear?

3. The system has passed Radiated susceptibility tests as per EN61000
standard. Do you still suspect the arcing discharge creating
issue rather than the ESD effect.
