Peter, 'e' refers to the protection concept that is applied for prevention of possible ignition. Increased safety is in general the application of additional measures to equipment that does not generate arcs or sparks in normal use to protect against the possibility of such occurences. It is usually applied to such devices as motors, batteries, lamps, and so on. All of the protection concepts have designatory letters; flameproof - 'd' intrinsic safety - 'ia' or 'ib' pressurised - 'p' encapsulation - 'm' oil-filled - 'o' quartz/sand filled - 'q'
