This isn't the first case of its kind. There was a real transponder
activated by accident in a storeroom in Glasgow, Scotland a few years
ago. I had a case to look at where an audio preamp was oscillating
strongly at 20 MHz, due to a faulty op-amp.
Many of these incidents are due to individual faults, not characteristic
defects in a design. Type testing doesn't control this, and a faulty
unit may have passed production-line scan but fail later.
