John, We are asking for explicit RoHS compliance statements from our suppliers. As well, we are asking for Pb-free statements on some class of components - BGAs especially.
You need the RoHS compliant statement to satisfy the Directive but you also need to understand if the supplier is assuming you are going to be applying the Pb-free exemption to your class of equipment!
