My many thanks to all those who replied to my casual survey.
Results are as follows:
Respondents: 21
1. Compliance engineers per company ranged from 1-40, with 1-6 being most
common.
8 - 1 man shows;
12 - 1 or 2 man (just over half);
7 - 3 to 6 man;
1 - 40 man operation.
2. EMC:PS ratio was fairly balanced; most were even, but had a couple tilt
one way or the other -- 4:1 offset by 1:4, depending on the type of company.
3. Dual roles: just over half.
4. Of those with dual capabilities but only 1 role, 4 of 21.
5. Product development engineers:compliance engineers -- probably the most
interesting
range -- 2.5:1 to 500:1 (500:1 -- don't know how you 2 do it!)
</=10:1, 6
</=20:1, 13
</=25:1, 16
</=50:1, 19
"typical" (average without the 500:1) = 20:1
In the case of 3 respondents, if we included just hardware engineers, the
ratio changed from 13:1 to 5:1, 20:1 to 10:1, and 20.
There really is insufficient information in the scope of the survey to
produce robust statistics, but it does paint an interesting cross section of
our activities.
Thanks to all who participated.

Subject: Compliance Engineers survey
Hello Group,
In a recent conversation, the topic of ratios of compliance engineers to
various references came up. Seemed like an intriguing issue; I would like
to take it beyond speculation. I volunteer to summarize the results of a
short survey and post it to the forum.
The questions are as follows:
1. How many compliance (a.k.a. regulatory) engineers at your company?
2. What is the ratio of EMC to product safety engineers at your company?
3. How many engineers have dual roles, i.e., provide both EMC and product
safety services at your company?
4. How many engineers have dual role capability, but currently work only in
one role?
5. What is the ratio of product development engineers to compliance
engineers at your company?
Regards,
Don Umbdenstock
