Hi John, You are quite correct that for some of the products mentioned IEC/EN 60065 could be more appropriate. Of course, for a MP3 player, is it more like a small computer than a classic audio device? The laptop I'm typing this Email on is playing a CD as I type, but that doesn't make it a 60065 device. This overlap is why TC74 and TC92 got together to start work on the Hazard Based standard in TC108, as you know. Some people may not know that, some years back, TC92 and TC74 of old concluded that - if a manufacture has a product that could fall into the scope of both 60065 and 60950-1 - then that manufacturer could choose to use either standard, since they both gave an adequate and comparable level of safety. This got round the need for manufacturers of overlap equipment to test/certify to both 60065 and 60950-1. Using the above approach, if you work in a company making set-top boxes or TVs then you could continue to use 60065 as your base standard, even though these products have a lot of computing power: that way you didn't have to learn 60950-1. Conversely, if you work in a company making computer equipment and you come out with a personal stereo based on digital technology that is small enough to fit in your pocket (whereas a few years back the same functionality would require a desktop computer) then you can use 60950-1. Raymond therefore should look at the scopes of 60065 and 60950-1, look at his product range, and decide accordingly. His initial question was about the legislation that applied, not which standards, though perhaps this exchange will also be of help? Am I going to look into my crystal ball to see when I think the Hazard Based standard will actually hit the list of published IEC, CENELEC, UL, etc publications??? No, not me...
