IEEE/EMC Society Meeting

November 8, 2005

Time: Social 5:30 p.m. Presentation 7:00 p.m.

Place: Applied Materials Bowers Cafeteria

3090 Bowers Ave., Santa Clara, CA 95051-0804

Subject: BPL Emissions Compliance Guidelines

Speaker: Jerry Ramie

Access Broadband over Power Lines is a new type of carrier current technology
that provides high-speed broadband Internet access using electric utility
companies’ power lines. Controversy has surrounded the deployment and
testing of BPL systems since they were introduced. The Certification
requirements outlined in this Presentation are the required means for
assessing compliance and mitigating interference complaints. Understanding
their unique features will be necessary for EMC, Power and Radio
Communications engineers to ensure BPL compatibility with existing radio
services.

The Presentation describes the various system architectures, and details the
Certification requirements of the FCC Report and Order 04-245 that took effect
on February 7, 2005. This work is from the Electric Power Research
Institute’s publication # 1011663, and is now available to the public by
calling 1-800-313-3774 (option 2).
