Chris,
I suggest you might like to subscribe to the IPC "leadfree" email forum
which is devoted to RoHS and WEEE issues. There are searchable archives.

Also see the UK NPL website for good info on Pb-F reliability.

Chris

Subject: RE: Off-topic: lead free solder and reliability

Jim,

This is a very interesting topic. I am in the process of migrating the
first of our products to lead-free and your e-mail and John's reply
made me pause (complete with alarmed look!) for thought.

Reliability of Pb-free solder was brought into question here on the list

about a year ago - possibly longer. I have come to believe - possibly
through
misinformation - that most of the problems were the "teething" sort
(early
days) and that now the process was understood, there were no more major
problems with Pb-free solders and processes.

I followed some links from John's e-mail and I am beginning to worry
about
Pb-free.

Please keep this thread going.

Rgds

Subject: Off-topic: lead free solder and reliability

Can anyone can point me to any reliability studies done on lead-free
soldering? I'm not looking for "how to" information but for studies
that assume it's done right and then evaluate the reliability impact (if
any)? For example, lead-free solders are harder and more brittle, so
reliability in the face of vibration is lower compared to conventional
lead solder, even if the process is optimized.

Thanks,
