Carl,

I have not worked with a UPS for many years but I was once responsible for
building a central office for a security company. It featured a battery back
power system capable of keeping the telephone and computer systems online for
a few hours. I had them do all the standard logging of the parameters like
voltage, temperature, electrolyte specific gravity and so on. I also had an
automated system that would transfer operation to the battery bank for 5
minutes once every 24 hours. By monitoring the voltage drops during this test
period, I could anticipate the imminent failure of a battery.

As for long term predictions, I’m not certain you can do this reliably.
There are too many environmental and operational factors involved.

Regards,

-Doug

Subject: Lead acid batteries - prediction of life

Dear All,

Has anyone any experience of resistance testing of lead acid batteries used in
Telco installations to determine the remaining life ?

Cheers

Carl
